Honors English 9

Welcome to Honors English 9!

Week of 10/15 - 10/18

We have wrapped up the second act of Romeo and Juliet, and students are ready for a test on this section. We will then move onto the third, and longest, act in the play. Act III includes many intricate plot details, and students will be given supplemental worksheets in order to help them understand the action of the play.

Tuesday 10/15 - Test: Romeo and Juliet Act II   (includes vocabulary, Latin prefix counter, and poetic meter questions)
Tuesday 10/15 - Classwork Due: Romeo and Juliet Study Guide Act II
Thursday 10/17 - Writing Assignment Due: Renaissance Faire Paragraphs (This assignment is only for students who attended last week's field trip.)

Week of 10/7 - 10/11

Students will continue reading Act II of Romeo and Juliet this week in class. Students will be responsible for reading sections of the text at home/outside of class. I've provided the students with a link that should help them with this reading (it is in the upper right corner of the homework blog - "Romeo and Juliet Script"). I encourage the students to use this website in order to help them understand the readings. Students will be given a "pop quiz" on the selections during the next class session.

**Thursday 10/10 - Field Trip! PA Renaissance Faire**

Week of 9/30 - 10/4

We are continuing our reading of Romeo and Juliet this week. Students will have a test on the first act of the play on Tuesday after we do a comprehensive review on Monday. We will then move onto reading act two.

Tuesday 10/1 - Test: Romeo and Juliet Act I
Tuesday 10/1 - Classwork Due: Study Guide Act I

Friday 10/4 - Students are responsible for reading Act II scene ii outside of class (pop quiz on Friday)

Week of 9/23 - 9/27

This week we are reading Act I of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. We will be reading this entire act in class together until students get used to the language and the setup of the play. Students will be responsible for taking notes as we read and for completing their study guide as well.

Thursday 9/26 - Latin prefix trans- worksheet due

Week of 9/16 - 9/20

We will be finishing up our introduction to Shakespeare this week in class. Students will have a quiz on Wednesday. We will then begin reading "Romeo and Juliet."

Wednesday's test will include information from 1) Literature and Culture Worksheet, 2) Globe Theatre Diagram Worksheet, 3) Shakespeare Student Notes Packet

Week of 9/9 - 9/13

This week in class, we will be studying and discussing life and times in Shakespeare's England. Students will receive an introduction to the Renaissance period as well as the life of Shakespeare, the Globe Theatre, and a "troubleshooting" session on Shakespeare's language. This is all in preparation for us to begin reading the great love story, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. 

Students will go on a "Web Quest" to explore Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and will receive a quiz grade for doing this. They will also watch a video that presents evidence that Shakespeare may not have written the works he gets credit for.

**Important Upcoming Events** - Students received information this week about attending the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The field trip will take place on Thursday, October 10. Permission slips and check/money ($30.00) are due by Monday September 16.

 



Week of 8/26 - 8/30

Students will start this week with a review on Monday of the summer reading novel The Hobbit. Students will then take the test on this novel on the second day of school.
We will go over the introduction to the course and all of the expectations for this course in the following days.

Students will need a 3-ring-binder for their English course this year.
